Last night, I had the pleasure to attend the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. It was a fantastic event, with great food and great energy in the room.
Last night, I had the pleasure to attend the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. It was a fantastic event, with great food and great energy in the room. I loved listening to the speeches from the winners in each of the different categories, because they all shared some common elements, namely that there was tremendous struggle before success was finally achieved. Matthew Corrin, the dynamic founder of Freshii, talked about almost missing payroll twice in his first six months of operations, but rallied to open another store and then another and another.

I love reading Fred Wilson's blog avc.com. I love it because Fred is a brilliant investor (twitter, etsy to name two) and because he is generous with his insights. Moreover, Fred is not afraid to express doubt, concern or skepticism about an industry that has, most likely, made him a very wealthy man. Recently, Fred blogged about the proliferation of web startups and his concern about who exactly is funding these companies...

I've just finishing reading Matthew Syed's book, “Bounce: Mozart, Federer, Picasso, Beckham and the Science of Success” (Harper Collins, 2010). It's a wonderful book with a myriad of lessons for deal makers, the most important of which, to me, concerns the assessment and capabilities of people.
